Our bold vision is that one day, all students in Durham, regardless of the color of their skin and the amount of money their parents have in their pockets, will be able to succeed. In order to make this vision a reality, Student U’s mission is to empower students in the Durham Public Schools to own their education by developing the academic skills and personal well-being necessary to succeed in college and beyond. Student U aims to combat systemic racism and structural inequities by walking with students from the 6th grade through college graduation as they beat the statistics and become leaders in our community. The three components of Student U programming - an intergenerational college access-success pipeline, leadership development for students, families and staff, and an open source model of sharing our lessons learned is our contribution to creating a Durham where all children can succeed. Our ambitious goal is for 100% of our students to graduate high school, enroll in post-secondary institutions and matriculate from those within 6 years. We believe that this is possible for all students in our community.
Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the Bilingual Families Advocate is a part-time (15 hours a week during the school year and up to 30 over the summer) position responsible for ensuring all Student U staff have the cultural competence to support the academic and life outcomes of Latinx students. Specifically, this person will ensure our programs are responsive to the experiences and needs of Latinx students, communication with families is consistent across all programs and our interpretation and translation practices reflect best practices. This person will have the primary function of managing all interpretation and translations for Student U, serving as an interpreter for families and coordinating interpretation efforts in high demand times for our teams. This is a new position on the Student U team with room for growth and evolution, as is necessary, over time.
Program Development and training:
- Support the development of all Student U programs and advocate for the needs and experiences of Latinx students and their families
- Train all Student U staff in best practices and cultural competency for working with and supporting Latinx students and their families
- Lead and implement communication plans and translations protocols for all Student U programs
- Serve as lead interpreter to our full time and part time staff as requested by staff to ensure families stay informed of their students’ academic progress and remain connected
- Manage all relationships with interpretation agencies that Student U utilizes for large scale events
- Support advocates with parent communication for Spanish-speaking parents to ensure parents remain
- Serve as main liaison for spanish speaking families to Student U
- Coordinate on-going connection of Latinx families to program
- Represent Student U in coalitions and strategic partnerships to improve access to education for Latinx students in Durham and North Carolina
An ideal candidate will become an indispensable member of our time within 3 months. Candidates will be excellent written and spoken communicators in English and Spanish, dedicated to the task of supporting Latinx students and their families, believe all children can succeed when adequately supported, and able to fully immerse into a community-driven organization. At the minimum, candidates must have relevant work experience.
The majority of Student U’s programming supports students during out-of-school time. This position will require some evenings and weekend work and will have more work during the summer when all of our programs are in full swing.
- Bilingual in Spanish, Advanced Spanish fluency required (Spanish interpretation certification preferred)
- 1-2 year experience working in academic settings with first-generation Latinx students
- Experience coordinating multiple projects at once
- Ability to integrate and work with multiple teams
- Ability to communicate effectively to various stakeholders including students, parents, teachers, administrators, community partners
- Ability to develop strong relationships of trust with students, families, and staff
- High expectations for students, families and self
- A deep personal belief that all students can succeed and a willingness to work with students and families to make college a viable reality for all Student U students

Benefits and Hourly Rate: The hourly rate is $19 and in addition, a benefits package includes: Wellness Stipend, PTO (5 vacation days and 2 floating holidays) and access to purchase membership to Student U’s health insurance plan.
